History of La Vecchia Scuola

La Vecchia Scuola restaurant occupies a 300-year-old building with a rich history that includes York College for Girls, a doctor’s residence, and a lawyer’s house.

The building even dates back to Roman times when a fortress stood on the site. York College for Girls opened in 1908 and was known for its exceptional music department, producing famous alumni like Dame Janet Baker. The college also educated notable doctors, solicitors, and university lecturers.

Refectory to Restaurant

La Vecchia Scuola in York used to have different entrances for teachers, parents and students. In the mid-1990s, the last Headmistress Erica Taylor made the green door the main entrance for everyone.

The bar area used to be the Headmistress’ study and the area to the left was a waiting room. The dining area was the school refectory, while the landscaped gardens were once the College playground.

The restaurant area, reception and waiting area have various school memorabilia including books, photos and records. La Vecchia Scuola is a restaurant that pays tribute to this vibrant past.
